Tips for Getting Promoted: 7 Actions You Can Do for the Next 12 Months to Increase Your Chances
I always wonder, if people ask for tips for getting promoted, are they actually asking for short cuts or will they work on it. Because I do not believe there are a lot of short cuts in this world. And because most things worth having are things you have to work on and work for. Work on because you need to improve, work for because you need to pursue.
So, what are the 7 actions you need to do in the next few months to get a chance on getting promoted?
1. Get The Basics Right AND More
The stress is on the word AND. Note that it is not OR. Get the basics right especially the basic ethics of working like being punctual, managing your time well, sticking to deadlines and keeping to promises. Good value we use as humans. AND more. These are things related to your work. What are the things that are important for the role you have now? Fulfill these to the best of your ability.
2. Get More Done
These first two tips for getting promoted works together, getting the basics right is important because if your basics are not right there is no need to talk about a promotion. Once you have that, work on more things like taking initiatives, be more productive than is expected of you, more effective and more efficient. Why is "more" important? Because you deserve your current position if you deliver good work. If you deliver excellent work, you deserve a promotion.
3. Know The Details
Do you know the finer details of your work? Meaning what your role entails? What are the most important things that your role plays?
For example, if you are a sales person, the most important detail is you bring in the cash the company needs. The better you sell the more money the company gets.
Work on being the best in that role. Know the role your boss plays in the company too. Make your presence a competitive advantage for him. Make him look good. That’s one role most people know but is reluctant to play, and is one of the simplest tips for getting promoted.
4. Act The Part
You want to be a manager? Act the part. No, I do not mean by being bossy and all. It means do the work that the next level entails. But make sure you nail whatever level you are right now first. The basics, remember that. Then act and do the work beyond your scope.
5. Maturity
How does maturity creep into the tips for getting promoted? In my years in the working world I was appalled at the amount of childishness I see. You want to be promoted, start acting maturely. That means having composure when the going gets tough, when dealing with toxic people. Being calm and being able to control your emotions is important as you will soon be managing people.
6. Leader Manager
Start showing leadership qualities and managing skills. Do not think that these two qualities are mutually exclusive. They are not. You require both when you move up the ranks. I have seen a lot of people making themselves believe that they are the big picture people and not implementation oriented. Think both. Not one. You may not be excellent in both but you need to be good in one and excellent in the other. Either way, one weak or one strong does not work as well.
7. Nice Expert
The last tip for getting promoted is to have real expertise. Be the go to guy. Develop your personal brand and stand for something. Do you have an answer for - what do you do? What do you do well? Why do people come to you? What makes people come to you? And be nice. People gravitate to experts who are nice. Do not believe you have to be an asshole or a bitch to be great and gain respect. It’s not true.
