Honesty At Work – What Can Honesty Do For You?
Honesty at work? I am sure the thoughts running through your head right now are - are you serious? Does honesty at work have a place ion our cut throat corporate world? The simple answer is, yes, there is.
You just have to look at the number of CEOs that are serving jail sentences now to know honesty does have a place at work today. What can honesty do for you at work?
1. Get Credibility, A Rare Commodity
When honesty is at work with you, you gain credibility. Credibility is a rare commodity at work nowadays. People make false promises, they do not live up to their words and they cook up same old excuses. If you work honesty into your work values, you can see how your credibility at work will soar. Say what you mean and mean what you say and see how people start to respect you for your frankness.
2. Gain Respect With Actions
Not words, it reminds me of a poem I learned as a kid, “A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds…” When you practice honesty at work with your actions and not false promises and false excuses, you start to gain the respect of colleagues and managers alike. It’s a breath of fresh air in our "let’s put on a mask when at work" workplace.
3. People Have Faith In You
By this, I truly mean faith. You will somehow gain faith of people who may not even have worked with you. They buy into your plans and your words. Perhaps, it is the reputation you have created along the way. While they may not know how you will work your proposal, they will still buy into it. Your honesty at work brings out the faith in people. It provides the anchor for people’s belief.
4. Others Will Use Sincerity
Almost certainly, your honesty will attract like minded people who will reciprocate with sincerity to you. Your dealings at work will be a lot cleaner in all sense of the word; there are no cover ups, no half lies and no opportunity for such a condition where lies are needed to begin with. This is because of the environment you have created for yourself and the office.
5. Truth Usually Meets With Truth
How many lies does it take to refute a truth? A lot. Then the lies need to be covered up with lies. The best way to ‘beat’ honesty is to use the truth. It is for this reason, one of the best benefits for being honest is you will meet with truthful people as well. Then there will be no need for politics and back stabbing. Even when these exist, your truth will withstand the test. And honesty is effortless. Lies are tiring.
6. The Benefit Of Blamelessness
When you are honest, you have the benefit of blamelessness. What can stick on you except perhaps for speaking the truth? I have not been taught before that speaking the truth is wrong. Have you? This blamelessness protects you from evil politicking colleagues. While you have to suffer their back stabbing for a while, eventually you will come out the winner.
7. A Sense Of Security
If you feel vulnerable for bringing honesty at work, then you have got the concept wrong. You need to change your perspective. Honesty protects you, not hold you back or gets you into trouble. If honesty is not tolerated in your workplace and does not give you a sense of security, you are at the wrong place. You should be making plans to leave the company.
Honesty at work – how can it benefit you? Plenty, the only thing that can hold you back is whether you can feel it in your gut and stick to your guns to gain from it.
